ODT to DOCX Converter and Viewer
View an OpenDocument text file and turn it into a Word document, without installing LibreOffice.
Drop an ODT file here
You get a Word (.docx) file. Converted on this device: the file is not uploaded. Up to 50 MB.
Converting happens inside your browser, so this needs JavaScript turned on.
Preview
The preview shows the start of the document; the downloaded file has all of it.
View an ODT file, then save it for Word
- Open the .odt file with the button above or drop it onto the page. Documents from LibreOffice Writer, Apache OpenOffice, Google Docs (as OpenDocument) and other ODF programs work.
- Read it in the preview. That is the ODT viewer part: the document as it reads, with its formatting and pictures. Nothing is installed.
- Click Download Word (.docx) to keep a copy in Word’s format.
The file is unpacked and converted by your browser, on your device; it is not uploaded to a server.
From LibreOffice styles to Word formatting
ODT documents keep most of their look in named styles, such as “Heading 1” or “Text Body”, with sizes often given as a percentage of another style. The converter works each style out down to its final font, size, color, alignment and spacing, and writes that formatting directly into the Word file.
| In the ODT file | In the .docx |
|---|---|
| Paragraph and character styles, direct formatting | Kept as formatting |
| Bulleted and numbered lists, with their start numbers | Kept |
| Links and pictures (PNG, JPEG, GIF) | Kept |
| Page size, orientation, margins | Kept (US Letter or A4) |
| Tables of contents and sections | Their text |
| Tables | Tab-separated lines |
| Footnotes, comments, headers, footers, text boxes, drawings, charts, formulas, SVG pictures | Not carried over |
Word style names themselves are not kept: a heading looks the same in Word, but is not marked “Heading 1” there.
Questions
How do I open an ODT file without LibreOffice?
Drop it on the box above. The page reads the file in your browser and shows it in the preview, with its fonts, colors, lists and pictures, so you can read it without installing anything; Download Word (.docx) then gives you a copy for Word. Word and Google Docs can also open .odt files themselves.
What is an ODT file?
An OpenDocument Text file: the word-processing format of the OpenDocument standard (OASIS, also published as ISO/IEC 26300) and the default format of LibreOffice Writer and Apache OpenOffice Writer. Like a .docx, it is a zip package of XML files with the pictures stored inside.
Why convert ODT to DOCX?
Most offices, schools and job sites expect Word documents, and a .docx opens the same way in Word, Google Docs, Pages and LibreOffice. Converting saves the person you send it to from guessing how to open an .odt.
What does not carry over from the ODT file?
Body text, fonts, sizes, colors, highlight, alignment, spacing, lists, links, pictures and the page size and margins do. Footnotes, comments, headers and footers, text boxes, drawings, charts and formulas do not, and tables become tab-separated lines. The result lists whatever your file had of these.
Can I edit the document here?
Yes, in the editor: open the .odt there with File → Open or drag it onto the page, change the text and formatting, and save it as .docx, .rtf or PDF. The editor cannot write .odt, so your original file stays as it was. Open it in the editor.
Does it open .ods spreadsheets or .odp presentations?
No. Only OpenDocument text documents (.odt) and their templates (.ott) are read. A spreadsheet or presentation gets a message saying so.
