About WordPad.me
WordPad.me is a free, WordPad-style word processor that runs in a web browser. It opens, edits and saves Rich Text (.rtf) and Word (.docx) files, with the ribbon layout people knew from WordPad on Windows 7, 10 and 11.
Why it exists
Microsoft removed WordPad starting with Windows 11 version 24H2. Word costs money and Notepad has only basic formatting and can’t show RTF files as formatted text, so a lot of people lost the simple tool they used for letters, notes and RTF files. WordPad.me fills that gap on any computer, including Macs and Chromebooks, with nothing to install.
How it handles your documents
Everything happens in your browser. Files you open are read on your device, and files you save are created on your device. The document is never sent to a server. A draft is kept in your browser’s storage so a closed tab does not lose your work; see the privacy policy for details.
What it does not do
- No accounts, sharing or cloud storage.
- No tables, headers or footnotes: like WordPad, it is a simple editor. Word files that use them are simplified when opened.
- Old .doc files cannot be opened yet. OpenDocument .odt files open, but are saved as .docx or .rtf: there is no ODT writer.
